Who Walking Holidays Suit
Walking holidays suit people who enjoy a few hours on foot each day but want a hot shower and a proper bed at night. You should be able to walk 3–5 hours with breaks, often uphill, at 2,200–3,500 m. The walks are on good paths; none need technical skills. Our guides set the pace for the group, and the car is never far away if you want to skip a walk.

Tiger's Nest is the walk everyone does: about 500 m of climbing to the monastery on the cliff. Chele La is the highest road pass in western Bhutan, and the ridge walk from it gives views of Jomolhari on a clear day. The Gangtey Nature Trail crosses the floor of the Phobjikha valley, where black-necked cranes spend the winter. The Trans Bhutan Trail is the restored 400-km route that once linked the dzongs; you can walk sections of it for a day or link several days together.
Walking Holiday Itineraries
Our Bhutan Day Hikes tour is a 9-day trip with a different walk each day, from Kyichu Lhakhang and Chele La to Tango, Khamsum Yulley and the Gangtey trail, finishing with Tiger's Nest. The 12-day Trans Bhutan Trail tour walks the historic route across the country. If you want one or two nights of camping, the Druk Path and Bumdra treks are the gentlest options.
When to Go
Spring (March–May) brings rhododendrons on the passes; autumn (October–November) has the clearest skies. Winter walks are possible in the lower valleys, and Punakha stays mild. The monsoon months (June–August) are wet and the views are often in cloud. See the best time to visit Bhutan.
What to Bring
Comfortable walking shoes or light boots with grip, walking poles, a daypack, a rain jacket, warm layers for the passes, sun protection and long sleeves and trousers for visiting temples. Day packs, poles and picnic lunches are included on our day hikes tour.
Walking Holiday Tour Lengths and Prices
Our walking holiday tours run from 4 to 15 days. Prices are per person and include hotels, meals, guide, car and driver, the visa and the SDF. The lower figure is the price for two or more travellers; the higher figure is the solo price on the most expensive tour of that length.
| Length | Tours | From (per person, 2+ travellers) | Up to (solo) |
|---|
| 4–6 days | 1 | US$1,340 | US$1,590 |
| 7–9 days | 4 | US$1,900 | US$3,300 |
| 10–12 days | 2 | US$3,200 | US$3,900 |
| 13–16 days | 1 | US$3,990 | US$4,390 |
Most walking holidays run 9–12 days, which allows a different walk each day and a rest day in the middle. Shorter options combine two or three day hikes with sightseeing.
