By Best of Bhutan Research Desk · November 7, 2026 · 8 min read
The 17th Gyalwang Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, is making his first visit to Bhutan. According to his office, he landed at Paro International Airport late on the morning of 30 October 2026. Since then he has visited Kyichu Lhakhang and Punakha Dzong, met His Majesty The King in Gelephu, attended the raising of the 108 stupas at Gelephu Mindfulness City on 1 November, and gave a public blessing to thousands of people at Changlimithang in Thimphu on 6 November, BBS reported.
The Karmapa heads the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. He left Tibet in 2000 and has lived in exile since, mostly in India. His office described the Bhutan trip as "a dream come true and the beginning of a historic journey" (Office of the Gyalwang Karmapa).

Day by Day: Where the Karmapa Has Been
This timeline is based on posts from the Office of the Gyalwang Karmapa and reporting by BBS and The Bhutanese. Dates are the event dates given in those posts.
30 October: Paro
After landing at Paro, the Karmapa was welcomed by government representatives, lamas from Karma Kagyu monasteries and devotees, and led in a procession from Zhiwa Ling Hotel. He then went to Kyichu Lhakhang, the 7th-century temple traditionally linked to the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo, and made offerings to its Jowo statue (Karmapa's office).
In the afternoon he spoke to more than a thousand trainee teachers and students at Paro College of Education. Telling them it was his first trip to Paro, he answered questions afterwards (Karmapa's office). That evening Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay visited him at his residence in Thimphu.
His office points to an older link with Paro: it says the First Karmapa, Dusum Khyenpa, did a retreat in Paro more than 800 years ago.
31 October: Punakha and Gelephu
On the way south he stopped at Punakha Dzong, the winter seat of the Zhung Dratshang (Central Monk Body). He visited its main temple, the Machen shrine and the protector chapel, and made lamp and mandala offerings. He then travelled to Gelephu, where he was met at the helipad by the Governor of Gelephu Mindfulness City, Dasho Dr. Lotay Tshering, and later received by His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen (Karmapa's office).
1–2 November: The 108 stupas at Gelephu
On 1 November, Lhabab Duchen and the anniversary of His Majesty's coronation, the Karmapa attended the raising of the 108 Jangchub Chortens along the Mau Chhu in Gelephu Mindfulness City. He sat on the main dais with His Majesty The King, Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen, His Majesty The Fourth Druk Gyalpo, the Sakya Gongma Trichen Rinpoche and the Ganden Tripa. The Je Khenpo led a Tashi Drup ceremony in the afternoon (Karmapa's office).
The Bhutanese reported that he offered three of the 108 stupas through the Karma Leksheling Foundation and other sponsors. He also paid for lighting the stupa complex and the 12 km circumambulation path. The paper described the offering as a gesture of gratitude to His Majesty.
On 2 November he received visiting lamas, called on the Sakya Gongma Trichen Rinpoche, and toured the stupas in the late afternoon (Karmapa's office). For background on the project itself, see our guide to Project 108 and the Gelephu stupas.
6 November: Public blessing in Thimphu
On 6 November the Karmapa gave a public empowerment at the Global Peace Prayer Ground at Changlimithang, Thimphu. BBS said thousands attended, with some people arriving the night before to get a place. BBS did not give a crowd figure (BBS).
Why This Visit Matters
It is a first. Karmapas have been tied to Bhutan through teachers and monasteries for centuries, but Ogyen Trinley Dorje had never been to the country before this trip. His office and Bhutanese media both frame it as historic.
It added to an already large week for Bhutanese Buddhism. The visit lined up with Project 108 in Gelephu, which drew senior figures from several Tibetan Buddhist schools to one stage. Gatherings like this are rare. They show the role Buddhism plays in Bhutan's public life and in how the country presents itself abroad. We cover that in more depth in Bhutan's Buddhist diplomacy.
A note on the title. Two lamas are recognised as the 17th Karmapa by different groups within the Karma Kagyu school. This article is about Ogyen Trinley Dorje, the Karmapa whose office and Bhutanese media reported this visit.
What It Means for Travellers
- No public schedule beyond 6 November has been announced. If you are in Bhutan now and hope to attend an event, check BBS and Kuensel daily. Your guide will also hear about public gatherings early.
- Expect crowds and road controls around big religious events. The Changlimithang blessing drew people from across the country. Large events in Thimphu can affect traffic in the town centre and parking near the stadium.
- Dress and conduct. For public blessings and temple visits, wear long sleeves and long trousers or skirts. Remove hats inside temples, and follow your guide on where photos are allowed. Bhutanese attendees wear national dress. Visitors are not expected to, but should dress modestly.
- You can visit the same places. Kyichu Lhakhang in Paro and Punakha Dzong are on most first-time itineraries. The 108 stupas in Gelephu are a new stop in the south. Our spiritual tours cover the main temples and pilgrimage sites, and the Gelephu guide covers getting there and where to stay.
- Entry rules have not changed. International visitors still need a visa and pay the Sustainable Development Fee. See our Bhutan visa guide and SDF explainer.
Planning a Pilgrimage-Focused Trip
If the Karmapa's visit has made you think about a Buddhist-focused trip to Bhutan, the route he took covers several key sites:
| Stop | What to see | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Paro | Kyichu Lhakhang, Paro Dzong, Tiger's Nest | 2–3 days |
| Thimphu | Buddha Dordenma, Memorial Chorten, Changlimithang | 1–2 days |
| Punakha | Punakha Dzong, Chimi Lhakhang | 1–2 days |
| Gelephu | The 108 Jangchub Chortens on the Mau Chhu | 1–2 days |
Gelephu is a long drive south from Thimphu, so it suits trips of seven nights or more. Our Paro and Thimphu pages have more on each town.
