Wangdue Phodrang, Bhutan

If Punakha is the gentle winter garden, Wangdue is its windier, wilder neighbor. Known for the cactus that grows on its hillsides and the hardy spirit of its people, it’s a district of weavers and warriors. The old town was a bustle of shops until a fire in 2012, but the spirit remains. It’s the gateway to the central highway and the last stop before the climb into the Black Mountains.
