Trongsa, Bhutan
Before the east-west highway was cut, all travel across Bhutan passed through the courtyards of the Trongsa Dzong. Perched precariously on a spur overlooking a deep gorge, it was the ultimate power move—structure as strategy. Even today, the town feels perched on the edge of the world, commanding viewing of the endless Black Mountains. It serves as the psychological and physical gateway to the East.
