Sha Festival and Dragon Fury Race: Wangdue Phodrang 2026
By Best of Bhutan Research Desk · October 17, 2026 · 8 min read
The second Sha Festival opened in Wangdue Phodrang on 16 October 2026, running over two days at Gadhenlingka Park in Bajo, the district's new town. It was held together with the Dragon Fury Race, a cycling race from Thimphu over Dochula Pass to Bajo, now in its seventh edition. BBS and Daily Bhutan both reported on the opening day.
"Sha" is the traditional name for Wangdue Phodrang. The festival is organised by the Department of Tourism, the Wangdue Phodrang Dzongkhag Administration and the Bhutan Olympic Committee. Its stated aim is to give the district's 15 gewogs (sub-districts) a place to sell local produce and crafts, and to get more visitors to stop in Wangdue rather than drive straight through to Punakha or central Bhutan.

What Was on the Sha Festival Programme
The festival is built around local food, farm products and community culture rather than religious mask dances. That makes it different from a tshechu, and closer to the district-level festivals Bhutan has been adding to its calendar in recent years.
According to BBS, the programme included:
- Sha-Gi-Locho, a ritual mainly performed in the upper parts of the district once every three years, which local people believe wards off harm and brings peace.
- The Olep dance, a new song and dance composed by residents of Rukha Chiwog in the Olep language. Olep is spoken by very few people today, so the performance is also a way of keeping the language in use.
- Sha-Gi-Dachham, an archery dance particular to the district.
- Sha-Gi-Moley, a local beauty contest. The pre-event announcements by BW Travel and Travel World Online spell it "Molay Drendhur".
- Stalls of local produce and crafts, including millet flour and smoked fish from Athang Gewog, plus goods from cottage and small-scale businesses.
- Evening concerts by Bhutanese artists over both days.
Archery is Bhutan's national sport. The festival's archery dance is a Wangdue Phodrang tradition. This photo is representative and was not taken at the 2026 Sha Festival.
Turnout was low on day one
BBS reported that attendance was thin on the opening day. Some residents linked this to timing, because the festival fell in the peak farming season. A local leader from Phangyul Gewog told BBS the organisers should reconsider the dates. No attendance figures have been published.
For travellers, this matters in two ways. A smaller crowd means easy access to stalls and performances. It also means the festival dates could move in future years, so check before you build an itinerary around them.
The Dragon Fury Race
The Dragon Fury Race began in 2015 to mark the 60th birth anniversary of the Fourth King, according to the Bhutan Olympic Committee. It started as a mountain-bike race. In 2025 it used the Thimphu–Wangdue road over Dochula Pass, which sits at about 3,150 m.
Changes in 2026, as reported by Daily Bhutan and the pre-event announcements:
- Direction. Riders started at Changlimithang in Thimphu and finished at Gadhenlingka Park in Bajo. The 2025 race ran the other way, from Bajo up to Thimphu, over 70 km.
- Road bikes. Road cyclists could enter for the first time. Before this, the race was mainly a mountain-biking event.
- Open field. Entry was open to Bhutanese riders, international visitors and expatriates living in Bhutan.
- Race support. Marshal points, electronic chip timing, medical teams and cheering points staffed by local schools and communities.
- Prizes. A total of Nu 170,000 for the leading men and women, with extra awards for the youngest and oldest riders. Every finisher received a certificate, medal and T-shirt.
From Thimphu (about 2,330 m) the route climbs to Dochula and then descends more than 1,700 m to Bajo (about 1,410 m), using the elevations listed by the Bhutan Olympic Committee. The race reached Bajo for the festival's opening. Results had not been published at the time of writing; we will add them when they are confirmed.
Why It Matters
Wangdue Phodrang is on almost every western Bhutan itinerary, but mostly as a road junction. Visitors pass Bajo on the way to Punakha, the Phobjikha Valley or Trongsa, and few stop. The Department of Tourism has said it wants the district treated as a destination in its own right. In the pre-event release carried by BW Travel, its director, Damcho Rinzin, described the festival as a step in that direction.
Pairing a sports event with a district festival fits a wider plan. In May 2026 Business Bhutan reported that the Bhutan Olympic Committee intends to use sports events to promote tourism. Events like these give travellers a reason to visit places outside the Paro–Thimphu–Punakha circuit, and give local producers a market.
Wangdue Phodrang Dzong, founded in 1638, sits on a ridge above the river confluence near Bajo.
What It Means for Travellers
If you are in Bhutan now. The festival's second and final day was 17 October. Bajo is roughly 70–75 km from Thimphu by road over Dochula, based on the race distances, and sits on the main road to Punakha and central Bhutan.
If you want to attend next year. The organisers say they want the Sha Festival to become an annual event, but a 2027 edition has not been announced. The 2026 edition was held in mid-October, and the turnout comments mean future dates could change. Ask your tour operator to confirm once the Department of Tourism publishes its 2027 events list.
If you want to ride the Dragon Fury. International riders can enter. You will still need to visit Bhutan on a licensed tour with a valid visa and pay the Sustainable Development Fee. Plan to arrive a few days early to adjust to the altitude in Thimphu before a climb to 3,150 m. The race date is announced by the Bhutan Olympic Committee; in 2025 it was held in early September, in 2026 in mid-October.
Combine it with other October and November events. Mid-October to November is one of the busiest festival periods in Bhutan. Within a short drive of Bajo:
- The Wangdue Phodrang Tshechu, usually in September or October
- The Black-Necked Crane Festival at Gangtey Goenpa in the Phobjikha Valley, held in November
- Sightseeing in Wangdue Phodrang and Punakha, including Punakha Dzong and Chimi Lhakhang
Our Bhutan festival guide and month-by-month guide to the best time to visit cover the wider calendar.
